2017 Rincon Invitational

Congratulations to our 2017 Rincon Invitational participants! We won 2 awards!! We won 1st place in the Most Shared Waves (which is what this contest is all about). Also, proud to say that we won the overall Team Spirit Award! We caught 50 waves in our 60 minute time slot and out of the total waves we rode, 95% of them we shared. We had 20 participants and great stoke for the day! Being invited to be in this event was again, because we gave back to the community. They had a speaker from the S.B. Scholarship Foundation explaining the Sophia Bartlow Scholarship, Sophia’s memorial and paddle out.

Thank you to Blinky and Mignonne Hubina at Ventura Surf Shop for honoring our members with William Dennis 50th anniversary t-shirts.

Thank you Mary for organizing our potluck, and to everyone who brought their dishes and Greta for taking care of us. Can’t wait for next year!

Intra-Club C-Street Nov. 5th 2016

“We started big and we ended big!” – S.B.C.S.C. President David Girard.

What a great way to end the inter-club season, surfing Middles with my fellow surf club members in 4 to 6 ft. waves.  We start out the season at Deveroux’s with great waves and food, and I find it only fitting we end the same way. The currents were strong and the waves were big, but that didn’t stop Carrie Eller from charging it. Everyone surfed the big stuff great and afterwards we all enjoyed a nice brunch on the grass at Middles watching the sets rolling through and talking about the past season of surf we’d had. A big shout-out to all the members who show up at each inter-club, you guys are the core of this club (you know who you are) and keep this club rolling. Thanks again for allowing Curt and I to be your inter-club captains. Your inter-club captain – Andrew

Intra-Club Contest 10/9/16

We’re getting to that time of year when there are less of those beautiful warm days of summer left, but Sunday just happened to be one of them. Talking to Dave Johnson I happened to notice how beautiful the coastline looked and mentioned it to Dave and he commented; yah it’s like a postcard and we’re living in it. Anyways the surf was kind of small with only one peaking working and already nine of the local boys on it, so Curtis Simpson, my co-captain and I decided it wouldn’t be a good idea to send out six guys in colored jerseys with horns blaring. So instead we put together expression session heats, no jerseys so we would blend better, and had Anna, Ken Pearse’s girlfriend, and Gretta David’s girl, judge the heats. It was fun and they did a GREAT job. Oh did I mention the excellent buffet we all enjoyed……..fresh fruit, bagels cream cheese, smoked salmon, etc., after the surf.  Hah a shout out to John Eggers, a friend of David’s, who came up the coast to join us surf our great waves up here in Santa Barbara……………Anyways til next time……Your Intra-Club Captain Andrew.

SBCSC Supports Soldier’s Surf Day at Campus Point

On October 1st the Surf Club helped put on a Soldier” Surf day to help military personnel and their family members.
John Church who heads up the group at UCSB had 7 participants attend at Campus Point. Surf instructors and helpers included Deb Trauntvein, Erin Caird, Paul Munson, Mary Turley, Joan Patchett, and Greg Loshak.
Some of the guys had a little experience with surfing, and some had none.  We started out with instruction on the sand, and then headed out into the surf. Conditions were small, but good for learning. This group caught on fast, and a number of first timers got up and rode their first wave.
This was a rewarding way to give something back to those that are willing to sacrifice so much for others. Everyone got something out of this great experience!

SBCSC Supports Operation Restoration (AMPSurf/The Wounded Warrior Project) on 9-11

Always great to see the Stoke when they ride a wave – makes your heart sing

Thanks again for the opportunity to give back to those who faced forward (AMPSurf & Wounded Warrior Project) Operation Restoration XI over the 9-11 weekend. Always great to see the Stoke when they ride a wave – makes your heart sing. I was wallowing in the “pity pot” due to minor setbacks on the home front, then I met Dennis, an Army Vet, and Hawaiian shredder from Maui who suffered from traumatic brain injury, paralysis and MS. Kinda put me and my “problems” in place. A happier, kinder soul I have never met. The first person to laugh at my “crap” jokes and the last one to stop laughing.  Special thanks to Ben at RunAmuck Photography for capturing the essences and the moment (after seeing the pics I cut the beard off and went on a diet.) – Kris Schuman

SBCSC Brings Home The Metal at The C- Street Classic 2016

Big Wave Dave Bring home the Goods for SBCSC
Big Wave Dave Bring home the Goods for SBCSC

As a volunteer and member of the Ventura Surf Club and Santa Barbara County Surf Club, I had an interesting insight into the preparation of a contest the size of the C-Street Classic. It’s a meet and greet of all the members who put so much time and effort into the event each year.

Working with Bruce Douglas , who by the way runs the event is a pleasure. Bruce also took time is his busy day to take 1st. in his age group. I didn’t surf in this event due to a problem with Planter facitis  so I helped run the raffle booth with my fellow members Keith and Sue Akins and Nancy Baloug  The booth being directly in front of all the action ,I had great view of the fine surfing being done by our Santa Barbara Club members. Tom Kunz basically riped the place up taking 1st in 19 and up shortboard and advancing to the finals in longboard in his age group. Curtis Simpson my co-inter club captain put on a good show taking 2nd. in his first round, but unfourtunly  getting skunked in the semi’s. Richard Deits surfed well  in legends taking 1st and our own club president showed up in the afternoon accompanied by his friend the major and the new girl in his life, the lovely Getta  to  take 4th.respectively in the Old Log division. Our friend and club member Michael Degregrio from Santa Cruz was there filming and doing interviews with his cameraman Mike Congdon of the event, should be fun to check out later…..All and all  the Santa Barbara  County Surf Club showed it’s mettle and took home the metal.                                                                                                                                    – Ti’ll next time Your inter-club captain Andrew

Santa Barbara County Surf Club Shares The Stoke With The Best Day Surf Day

Santa Barbara County Surf Club , Curtis Simpson, David Girard , Diane Thackory at August 20th Best day foundation
Santa Barbara County Surf Club , Curtis Simpson, David Girard , Diane Thackory at August 20th Best day foundation

The SB County Surf Club again helped with another Best Day Foundation Surf Day.  Kids with special needs were able to learn what “surf stoke” means when volunteers helped them experience surfing, kayaking, and boogie boarding.

On Saturday, August 20th, Diane Thackery, Curtis Simpson, and Dave Girard were at Leadbetter Beach to help. The next day Joan Patchett and Greg Loshak were on hand. The waves were small, but the smiles were big and the kids really enjoy the opportunity to do something they normally couldn’t do.

The next chance to give back to the community, and share the stoke, will be the Soldiers Day event in Goleta. The date has not been finalized, but it will probably be in October.

Thanks! Greg Loshak -Non Profit &  Special Events
